Some Spring

The weather got cold this week! We had been waking up to 55 degrees the week before, but this week it's been 40! And only about 60 during the day. And the wind...I'm growing very weary of the wind.

Yesterday I walked around searching for some more spring on our property and here is what I found.

This is a beaver tail cactus. They have the softest looking flowers!

Some Mormon Tea. This plant doesn't bloom every year, only when it gets enough water.

A crazy looking doves nest in my "greenhouse".
It's piled pretty high and she flies off and does her "come eat me" act when I go in there.

And the creosote. It has the bright yellow little flowers that the desert iguanas like to eat.
I've been keeping my eyes peeled for one, but no such luck.

I have to admit, I am a little glad it's still cold. It had been getting pretty warm in the afternoon and I was starting to worry about a long summer. Some cold mornings are putting me at ease. But I really would like a break from the wind. Sheesh!

Lizards!

The lizards are out in full force! I keep seeing them skitter away every where I look. This morning, while I watered some of my plants, a little one ran up to a smooth rock I had watered and licked up a few sips then ran off. Another big collared lizard waited while I watered my plant and then came up and took a big drink out of the puddle I made. I love lizards. Sometimes I run around trying to catch them. I know I look funny, but it is so fun and they are so cool to hold.

The only downside to lizards being out is that I know snakes are out too, so I need to watch for them. Tom hit one with the go cart the other day. It was going across the cart track and he couldn't stop in time. He thinks he only freaked it out because he searched and couldn't find it dead anywhere nearby.




It's so warm and beautiful out. I've planted two new cacti in my garden this year. A century plant and a caterpillar cactus. The ocotillos are getting green and are going to have blooms this year. And the desert willow is starting to get green too. I put some strawberry plants in pots on the back porch and moved my two tomato plants to bigger pots. We shall see if we get any fruit this year. Keeping critters out is almost impossible!
